GP OF JAPAN. RACE
A GRAND PRIX TO FORGET
Melandri and Gibernau both crash out at Motegi and Marco is airlifted to hospital in Dokkyo

Marco Melandri and Sete Gibernau both crashed out of the Grand Prix of Japan at Motegi today. The Spanish rider was the first of the two to abandon the race, sliding out of seventh place on the eleventh lap when trying to pass Carlos Checa.

Marco Melandri, who started from the front row, led the race from the opening lap and was chased by Loris Capirossi and Max Biaggi. From the tenth lap the trio started to swap places at the front of the group, with Biaggi then taking the initiative. Marco dropped to the back of the front group but stayed on the pace until the thirteenth lap, when he was sent to the ground in a collision with Valentino Rossi.

Marco suffered a deep wound on the sole of his right foot caused by the footpeg of his bike and was taken to the circuit hospital for an initial check and some temporary stitches. There was no bone fracture but the depth of the wound meant that Marco was taken to the local Dokkyo Hospital for further examination in case of internal injuries.

SETE GIBERNAU (crashed): “I tried from the start but I didn’t have the pace and I went down, it was my own fault. I was riding behind Checa and trying to force the pace a little, hoping the guys at the front would slow down because I knew I couldn’t go any faster. There’s no need to look for excuses, we’ve done badly again and that’s all there is to it. When it’s not one thing it’s another; we’ve had a difficult season but we have to remain confident that our luck will change.”

FAUSTO GRESINI (team manager): “Another disastrous day for the team, with crashes for both riders and injuries to Marco. We still don’t know the extent of the injury, or whether he will be fit to race next week. I am gutted because I thought both riders worked well for this race and we had hoped for a much different result.””.
