VALENCIAN GP. QUALIFYING SESSION
DANI JUST A WHISKER OFF POLE
The World Champion, who was affected by fuel delivery problems, finished just two thousandths behind Stoner, Aoyama is also on the front row
Dani Pedrosa and Hiroshi Aoyama both put themselves on the provisional front row for the Valencia GP.
The three-times World Champion was pipped to pole at the last by Casey Stoner who finished just two thousandths of a second ahead of him. Meanwhile, the Japanese rider posted the fourth best time of the day, three tenths behind the Australian. Pedrosa had to overcome carburation problems in the afternoon which have also dogged him at other rounds this season, but is confident his team will have his bike in good shape for Sunday’s race. Aoyama will look to keep working on the front suspension of his machine to find the necessary improvement to clinch a place on the podium, the target he has set himself for the last race of the season. DANI PEDROSA (2nd 1’36”145): “In the morning free we had problems with both bikes. On one bike there was a problem with the carburetion and the other had a brake issue. We needed a bit of time to fix the bakes, so I had to go out on the bike that had the fuel problem. In the afternoon we were only able to ride with one bike, trying to solve the problems from the morning, and also some tyres. We improved, but couldn’t get the fuel delivery just right yet. At the end we also had a few problems with the gearbox too. Sunday’s race, although it’s the last and we’ve won the championship already, is still very important. The expectation is high and we are racing at home, so we will have to be completely focused and aim for another win.” HIROSHI AOYAMA (4th, 1’36”509): “I believe that we have started the Grand Prix quite well. We improved from the morning to the afternoon and I felt good on the bike. We’ll have to keep working on the suspension, above all to improve the front end as we are lacking a bit of grip on the track. I am concentrating on finding my own rhythm and being consistent. I want to finish the season with a podium and to do that we need to improve by a couple of tenths yet.” TIMES |
