Personal biography
Jordi Viladoms Argüelles is preparing for his first full season as a professional rider at the age of 25. The Spaniard is hoping use the experience gathered during six seasons in the Spanish Championship to prove, firstly to himself, that he has a future in the sport.
An industrial engineer by trade, he decided that it was worth the effort to combine sport with studies and now, with his education behind him, he hopes to fulfil his dream: to be able to dedicate his professional career to motocross with the safety net of his studies there to safeguard his future.
Jordi started out in BMX and it was clear from an early age that he had talent. So much so, in fact, that after becoming Spanish Champion and participating in the World Championship, he had already gone as far as he could. The scarcity of national events and a lack of support to compete overseas meant that Viladoms had to park his bicycle and try his luck in motocross, a sport he knew equally well.
Jordi had first picked up a motorcycle at the same time he began riding bicycles. At just four years of age his father bought him an Italjet 50 and by twelve he was already competing in 80cc competitions, before moving on to 125 and 250. In the quarter-litre category he finished runner-up in the Spanish Junior series at the age of 18.
It was at that time that Jordi joined university and the time he dedicated to motorcycles began to diminish. “I stopped racing for a while because my parents and I were aware that only a few riders make a good living out of motocross and I had to secure my future,” explains Jordi. “That was the gamble I took and if it works out as I hope then it will have been a good choice.”
A year and a half ago he finished his degree and, since then, he has dedicated his time solely to motorcycles. Last year he took a major step forward as he finished sixth in the Spanish Championship with three consecutive podiums in the second half of the season after undergoing surgery on a back injury. The reward for his swift progress was a call-up to the Spanish team for the Motocross of Nations, where he was one of only three riders selected.
Riding alongside Javier García Vico and with the backing of Telefónica MoviStar, Jordi Viladoms sees 2005 as his big chance. “There are no excuses anymore; I dedicate myself 100% to motocross, something I have always worked towards, I have got a good team and a great team-mate in García Vico, who I will learn a lot from, and I’m training harder than anyone,” he affirms.
The time has come for Jordi to find out where his limits lie, something he has not had the opportunity to do so far, and to make the most of his big chance in the Spanish Championship.
